KPSC KAS Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The preliminary examination is an objective screening test consisting of two papers. Paper I generally covers national and international current affairs, humanities, Indian history, Karnataka history, geography, Indian polity, governance, economy and social development. Paper II focuses on Karnataka-related current affairs, science and technology, environment and ecology, general mental ability, data interpretation, comprehension and basic numeracy.

Candidates qualifying in the prelims are called for the mains examination, which is descriptive in nature. The mains syllabus generally includes qualifying language papers in Kannada and English, essay writing and General Studies papers. Major areas include Indian and Karnataka history, culture, society, polity, public administration, economy, rural development, science and technology, environment, ethics, integrity and aptitude.

The preliminary examination is used for shortlisting, while marks obtained in the mains examination and personality test are considered under the applicable merit rules. Candidates should download the latest official syllabus PDF before planning subject-wise preparation, as paper structure and marking provisions may be revised.
