Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
Applicants must satisfy one of the prescribed technical qualification combinations for the Assistant Loco Pilot post:
- Matriculation or SSLC with ITI from an institution recognised by the National Council for Vocational Training or State Council for Vocational Training in a relevant trade.
- Matriculation or SSLC with a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in a notified trade.
- A three-year diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering, or an approved combination of these engineering streams, from a recognised institution.
- A relevant engineering degree may be accepted in place of the three-year diploma, subject to the conditions specified in the detailed notification.
- Candidates must possess the required qualification by the eligibility cut-off date. Those awaiting final results are generally not eligible unless specifically permitted.
Age Limit
- The standard age limit for ALP recruitment is 18 to 30 years.
- OBC-NCL candidates: Three years of upper-age relaxation.
- SC and ST candidates: Five years of upper-age relaxation.
- Additional relaxation is available to PwBD candidates, ex-servicemen and other eligible categories under applicable railway recruitment rules.
- The exact age-calculation date must be checked in CEN 01/2026.
Fees
- General, OBC and EWS candidates: ₹500.
- SC, ST, PwBD, female, transgender, ex-servicemen, minority and eligible economically backward-class candidates: ₹250.
- Eligible candidates may receive a refund of the prescribed portion of the fee after appearing in the first-stage computer-based test, subject to deduction of bank charges and verification of payment details.
Selection Process
- First-Stage Computer-Based Test — CBT 1: A screening examination covering mathematics, mental ability, general science and general awareness.
- Second-Stage CBT and Computer-Based Aptitude Test: Shortlisted candidates appear for CBT 2. Those clearing the applicable stages must also qualify in the CBAT, where prescribed for ALP.
- Document Verification and Medical Examination: Candidates shortlisted on merit must present original documents and meet the stringent railway medical and vision standards applicable to Assistant Loco Pilots.
