Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

The required qualification varies according to the post selected by the candidate. Broadly, applicants must possess a relevant postgraduate degree from a recognised university or institution.

  • For geology-related posts, candidates should hold a master’s degree in Geological Science, Geology, Applied Geology, Geo-Exploration, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, Marine Geology, Earth Science and Resource Management, or another qualification specified in the detailed notification.
  • For geophysics posts, an M.Sc. in Physics, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Applied Geophysics, Marine Geophysics or an equivalent eligible discipline may be required.
  • For chemistry posts, applicants generally need an M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry from a recognised institution.
  • For hydrogeology posts, an eligible postgraduate qualification in Geology, Applied Geology, Marine Geology or Hydrogeology is generally required.
  • Candidates awaiting their qualifying examination results may apply provisionally where permitted, but they must produce proof of qualification at the stage prescribed by UPSC.

Age Limit

  • The general age requirement is expected to be 21 to 32 years as on January 1, 2027.
  • Candidates must have been born within the date range specified in the official notification.
  • The upper age limit is relaxable by five years for SC/ST candidates and three years for OBC candidates.
  • PwBD, ex-servicemen and other eligible categories will receive relaxation under Central Government recruitment rules.
  • Candidates seeking relaxation must possess valid supporting certificates in the prescribed format.

Fees

  • General, OBC and EWS male candidates: ₹200.
  • Women, SC, ST and eligible PwBD candidates: No application fee.

Selection Process

The UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist recruitment process comprises three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination: A computer-based objective examination used to shortlist candidates for the next stage. Negative marking may apply to incorrect answers.
  2. Main Examination: Shortlisted candidates appear for conventional, subject-specific written papers relevant to their chosen stream.
  3. Personality Test/Interview: Candidates qualifying the Main Examination are called for an interview. Final selection is based on performance across the prescribed stages, subject to document verification and medical requirements.
