Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • For the Indian Economic Service, candidates must hold a postgraduate degree in Economics, Applied Economics, Business Economics or Econometrics from a recognised university or institution.
  • For the Indian Statistical Service, candidates must possess a bachelor's degree with Statistics, Mathematical Statistics or Applied Statistics as one of the subjects.
  • Applicants with a master's degree in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics or Applied Statistics are also eligible for ISS.
  • Candidates awaiting their qualifying examination results were required to meet the conditions specified in the official notification.

Age Limit

  • The usual minimum age is 21 years, while the upper age limit is 30 years, calculated as of August 1, 2026.
  • Candidates should have been born between August 2, 1996 and August 1, 2005, subject to the final notification.
  • The upper-age relaxation is generally five years for SC/ST candidates and three years for OBC candidates.
  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, eligible ex-servicemen and other notified categories receive relaxation under central government rules.

Fees

  • General, OBC and EWS male candidates were generally required to pay an examination fee of Rs. 200.
  • Women, SC, ST and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities were exempt from paying the application fee.
  • Payment could be completed through the online facilities listed in the application portal.

Selection Process

  1. Written Examination: Applicants take service-specific conventional papers covering General English, General Studies, Economics or Statistics, as applicable.
  2. Interview/Personality Test: Candidates shortlisted through the written result are called for an interview conducted by UPSC. The interview assesses subject knowledge, judgement, communication skills and suitability for public service.
  3. Document Verification and Final Merit List: Educational, age, category and other eligibility documents are verified before the final result. Selection is based on combined written examination and interview marks, subject to fulfilment of all conditions.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the UPSC application portal through upsc.gov.in and open the online application section for the IES/ISS Examination 2026.
  2. Complete the required registration or account creation process using an active mobile number and email address.
  3. Enter personal, academic, category and examination-centre details carefully. Candidates applying for ISS must correctly provide information about their Statistics qualification.
  4. Upload the photograph, signature, identity document and other files in the prescribed format and size.
  5. Pay the applicable fee, review the form and submit it before the deadline. Save the final application form and payment receipt for future reference.
  6. As applications are now closed, candidates should visit the Written Results section of the UPSC website, open the IES/ISS Result 2026 PDF and search for their roll number using the PDF search function.
  7. Written-qualified candidates should retain their admit card and prepare original certificates relating to date of birth, educational qualification, category and disability status for the next stage.
