The written syllabus broadly covers English composition, a recognised state language, general knowledge and current affairs, the Code of Civil Procedure, criminal law and procedure, the Indian Evidence Act, contracts and torts, and the Transfer of Property Act. Optional subjects are governed by the examination scheme notified for Advt. No. 19/2023.

  • Candidates must be enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of West Bengal or another recognised State Bar Council, subject to the notification conditions.

  • SC and ST candidates from West Bengal and eligible persons with benchmark disabilities are generally exempt from the examination fee.
  • Candidates belonging to reserved categories of other states are normally treated as unreserved applicants for fee purposes.
  • Fees already paid are not ordinarily refundable.

Selection Process

  1. Preliminary Examination: An objective screening test used to shortlist candidates for the final written examination.
  2. Final Written Examination: Descriptive compulsory and optional papers assessing language ability, general awareness and substantive and procedural law.
